Subject - Angling Trust Wyvern Area Meeting

Dear Angling Trust Wyvern Marine Region Sea Angling member clubs,

I appreciate you may be aware of the planned forum, but bookings need to be boosted and I could do with your help on this.

Can I please ask you to bring the forum detailed below to the attention of all club members and ANY anglers you know, even if not Angling Trust members as this is a FREE event aimed at ALL sea anglers.

This will be the fourth sea fishing forum we are holding, the first being in Cornwall in a couple of weeks, then Wessex, Sussex, and finally your Wyvern Marine Region.

As many of you will be aware I have taken on the role as the Marine Regions Coordinator, so please contact me for day to day issues to do with sea angling and the Angling Trust.

Thanks for your help and I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible.

Kind regards,
Nevin Hunter

Subject - Plaice and Bass Competition Results

Would just like to remind everyone that next year's planning meeting will be held on Friday 8th November at 20.00hrs.

The last two competitions finally went ahead on the 19th/20th October. Yet again fishing was made hard with the wind and the extra water coming down the river which was muddy. Despite the conditions a few boats did go out and mainly fished in the Straight Point Area.
The winner of the Plaice Competition is our Commodore Peter Harris, who tempted a good fish of 2lb 2oz on his boat 'Lazy Fisher'.
The only other Plaice caught was by Steve Lomas to give him second position. Steve, fishing on his boat 'Patricia', also caught a Bass of 42cm which gave him second place in this competition as well. Both fish were returned alive.

The Winner of the Bass Competition was Me! I ventured out as far as the Boma, and after only a couple of drifts tempted a Bass of 3lb 14oz on a Rhubarb & Custard Lure. I then came back in close as the sea state got rougher.

Final Results of the Accumulator

1st Steve Lomas (Best Specimen Mackerel 85%) 28 points 3 Comps
2nd Mike Whiting 28 points 3 Comps
3rd John Astill 23 points 3 Comps
4th Steve Cowell 18 points 3 Comps
5th Carolyn Whiting 10 points 1 Comp
5th Tommy Dell 10 points 1 Comp
5th Pete Harris 10 points 1 Comp
8th Geoff Munson 8 points 1 Comp
9th Kevin Rouse 8 points 1 Comp

Subject - Recent Competition Results - Bream, Wrasse, and Conger.

Hi everyone

The Bream, Wrasse, and Conger Competitions went ahead on the weekend of 14th/15th September.
Despite it being sunny on the Saturday, fishing conditions were very difficult, with an easterly wind causing a swell. This made any anchoring up a little uncomfortable.
The sea did eventually calm down, and it was a much better day on Sunday.

There were 3 trophies up for grabs, and I'm pleased to say that they were all won!
Only one Black Bream was recorded, but it was nice to see that it was caught by Tommy Dell. Fishing aboard J's Pleasure, Tom managed to tempt a Black Bream of 2lb 14oz. This is worth 10pts in the Accumulator. Nice fish Tommy.
Steve Marks takes the Conger Trophy this year. Also fishing aboard J's Pleasure, Steve had an eel of 20lb. Geoff Munson came 2nd with a slightly smaller eel! How big? Ok, we won't go there.
Finally the Wrasse Cup was won by Geoff Munson. After narrowly missing out in the Conger Comp on Saturday, Geoff went out in his own boat Dancing Queen, on the Sunday, and caught a Ballan Wrasse of 2lb 11oz.

Well done all who took part.

The final competitions will take place on the weekend of 28th/29th September, as long as the weather behaves. It's the Plaice & Bass Competitions, and both are worth 10pts in the Accumulator. With 20pts up for grabs the Accumulator Competition is still wide open. I am hoping you can all get out there and fish.

Mike Whiting, Fishing Secretary.

Subject - Recent Competition Results - Mackerel and Most Species

Hi everyone

The Mackerel & Most Species Competition went ahead on the weekend of 24th/25th August. For a change the weather was quite kind to us, with light winds & sunshine.

There was a very good attendance this year with no less than seven recording catches in the Most Species and five in the Mackerel.
The Most Species result was very close, with only one species separating six fishermen. A total of 13 species were caught with the joint winners both having 7 each. Geoff Munson, fishing in his first Most Species Comp under the guidance of John Astill on Js Pleasure, caught Bass, Scad, Mackerel, Pout, Conger, Bull Huss & Dogfish. John & Steve Marks could only manage 6 species each. Steve Lomas on Patricia, caught 6 species, as did Steve Cowell, fishing from my boat Our Molly. I was the other joint winner with 7, which included Mackerel, Gurnard, Pout, Scad, Conger, Dogfish & Black Bream.

The Mackerel Competition, which is worth points towards the Accumulator, had a much clearer winner. This was Steve Lomas with a lovely fish weighing 1lb 14.4oz, and worth 10pts.
I was 2nd with a fish of 11.6oz. In 3rd place was Geoff Munson 10oz. 4th John Astill 9oz, & 5th Steve Cowell 8oz.

After 3 rounds these are the positions in the Accumulator.

1. JOHN ASTILL 23 pts 3 Comps
2. STEVE COWELL 22 pts 3 Comps
3. MIKE WHITING 18 pts 2 Comps
4. CAROLYN WHITING 10 pts 1 Comp
4. STEVE LOMAS 10 pts 1 Comp
6. GEOFF MUNSON 8 pts 1 Comp
6. KEV ROUSE 8 pts 1 Comp

Subject - Latest Information

The next competition will be the Mackerel & Most Species. The new date for this should make it happen on the weekend of 10th/11th August.

PS. Due to no Conger Eels being weighed in during the recent Conger Comp, you will all have another chance to catch one. It will be re-run alongside the Bream & Wrasse Comp on the weekend of 14th/15th September.
Best of luck to you all.

Accumulator Positions - The second round of the Accumulator Competition was fished over the weekend of May 11th/12th for Flatfish.
Despite it being a fine weekend the sea was messy with an algae bloom, (May Water), and only two Plaice were recorded. The heaviest, at 1lb-12.2oz, was caught by John Astill, and worth 10pts on the Accumulator. The other was caught by Steve Cowell, and worth 9pts.
After two comps the positions are as follows;

Subject - EDSFC vs SFCC Interclub Results

The annual Interclub Competition against Exmouth Deep Sea Fishing Club took place on Sunday 14th July. I'm pleased to say that the John Hall Trophy was once again won by SFCC !!
Despite being heavily out-numbered by the opposition due to holidays, mechanical problems, and other commitments, we managed to out fish EDSFC.

Exmouth's best fish were caught by Peter Cloak, with a 2lb-3oz Dogfish, 72.9% Specimen, and Dave Newman with a 2lb-13oz Ballan Wrasse, 56.2% Specimen. Total 129.1%. SFCC's best two were caught by Steve Lomas, with a fine Bull Huss, weighing 10lb-3.1oz, 84.9% Specimen, and me, with a 3lb-10oz Ballan Wrasse, 72.5% Specimen. Total 157.4%.
Well done to Geoff Munson, who on his first trip targeting Wrasse caught eight, the best weighing 3lb-6oz. And to Carolyn Whiting who caught several Wrasse, again with the best scaling 3lb-6oz. All the fish were weighed on board and returned to fight another day.

The fishing comp was followed by a Social Evening at Exe Sailing Club, where we were treated to Fish, Chips & Peas, followed by the trophy presentation. We were then entertained with a Roulette Table, where I'm also pleased to say we won too. Well done Pauline Harris.

On behalf of SFCC I would like to thank Gareth Awbrey and his team, and also Exe Sailing Club, for putting on a lovely evening for us all. Thanks to Russ as well, for getting us across and back safely on the Water Taxi.

Mike Whiting, Fishing Secretary.

Subject - 2019 Interclub Fishing Competition
SFCC vs EDSFC

Hi everyone
Sunday 14th July is the date for our annual fishing competition against Exmouth Deep Sea Fishing Club.
As always this is hard fought competition, and we can't allow Exmouth to walk away with the trophy!!

The team with the best two combined specimen fish percentages will be pronounced as the winners. Fish species and weight must be passed to me by 5.30pm, at the latest.

After the match EDSFC will be hosting a social evening in the Exmouth Sailing Club, which is well worth a visit if you've not been there before. There, we will be treated to fresh Fish, Chips & Mushy Peas, supplied by Krispies Fish n Chip shop. Bar opens at 6.45, with food served at 7.15.

There will be a Roulette table in the club for your entertainment, with a prize at the end of the night.

You do not have to fish the competition to attend the social evening, but we need as many as possible fishing to stand a chance of retaining the trophy.

I need to know if you will be attending the social evening by Sunday 7th July, so I can inform EDSFC how many to cater for. Please let me know by text on my mobile 07837 371551.

If for any reason the competition is cancelled, the evening function will still go ahead.

Mike Whiting, Fishing Secretary.

Subject - Pollack Competition Results

The 2019 Pollack Competition got underway on the weekend of 20th / 21st April. What a glorious weekend, with plenty of sunshine, light winds, and a good tide.
Despite the conditions only five people recorded fish on the club fish board. But this was a better return compared to last season.
The top fish was caught on the Saturday by my better half, Carolyn. Fishing a 6in Red Gill on a local wreck, she tempted several Pollack, the best weighing 6lb 15.4oz.
Second was me. Fishing with a Storm Sandeel I caught just a couple of fish, the best was 5lb 14.6oz. Steve Cowell who was also fishing with us on the Saturday, caught lots of fish, mostly Pout, but was also fourth with a Pollack of 4lb 6.2oz.

Sunday saw the return of Kev Rouse. Fishing aboard John Astill's boat "J's Pleasure" on a local wreck, Kevin caught lots of Pollack, with the best being 4lb 12.6oz, (and good enough for third position). John was 5th with a fish of 3lb 11.8oz.

Well done to all those who took part.

Next Competition will be the Flatfish Comp on the weekend of 11th / 12th May.

Mike Whiting, Fishing Secretary.

Subject - Recreational Bass Fishing 2019

Bass Restrictions for 2019 From IFCA on 10th January 2019 Following the December Council of Fisheries meeting, the new TAC (Total Allowable Catch) regulations are expected to be published during January 2019. It is expected that a bag limit of one fish per day from the 1st April to 31st October 2019 will be implemented for recreational fishers. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? In the meantime, the current Bass regulations still apply. From the 1st January 2019, recreational fishers are not allowed to retain any Bass when fishing. Any Bass caught must be immediately returned to the water. The Minimum Conservation Reference Size (MCRS) for Bass remains at 42cm.
