Subject - Bass and Pollack Competition, Bream and Conger Competition Results

BASS & POLLACK COMPETITION.
The Bass & Pollack Competition got underway on the Bank Holiday weekend, of 30th/31st August.
The comp had been moved to Sunday & Monday due to an unfavourable wind forecast on the Saturday.
There was only one fish recorded on the Sunday, this was a Bass measuring 48cms, caught by John Astill.
Monday saw a lot more fish recorded, the biggest was caught by me! Fishing over one of the close by wrecks using a 200gram Jig, I managed to tempt a Bass measuring 58cms and was worth 10pts towards the Accumulator Trophy. Joint second was John Astill & Steve Marks with Bass of 55cms. Both have 9pts in the accumulator. Fourth was Steve Cowell with a fish of 42cms and worth 7pts. Finally Pete Harris recorded a fish of 36cms which was returned alive. Pete gets 6pts.

The Pollack Trophy was won with a fish weighing only 2lb-1oz, (not sure if this was after filleting!!), and caught by John Astill on the Sunday. 10 Accumulator pts gained for John.
I think this was the only Pollack that was caught over the two days, which is a bit worrying.

BREAM & CONGER COMPETITION.
The Bream and Conger Competition went ahead on the weekend of 5th/6th September. The weather conditions were very good for anchoring on the rough ground for both species.
The Bream Comp was won on the Saturday with the only two fish recorded over the weekend. Josie Kirkland & Kev Rouse fished over the rough ground at Straight Point. Kev weighed in a fish of 1lb-13.4oz and worth 9pts in the Accumulator, but was out done by Josie who weighed a Bream of 2lb-1oz and worth 10pts. Josie also recorded a small eel, just in case!!

The Conger Trophy has been won by John Hall with an eel of 28lbs. On Sunday John was fishing on rough ground from his boat 'Blue Mist' and hooked into several eels including the “the one that got away” estimated to be between 40 & 50lb. John and his crew did catch several Bream too, but they were filleted by the crew before weighing, Well done Stewart!

Thank you everyone for taking part in all the competitions this season, but there is still one comp left.
This is the Flatfish, which was previously cancelled during the early days of “Lockdown”.
I have now been able to re-arrange for the weekend of 19th/20th September.
Please weigh on board and return alive if you are not keeping for the plate. Text me details of your catch if you are unable to record in the club by 6pm on the Sunday.
Your catch could make a difference as to who wins the Accumulator Trophy this season.

ACCUMULATOR POSITIONS AFTER 5 COMPETITIONS

1st Kev Rouse 27pts 3 comps
Steve Cowell 27pts 3 comps
3rd Mike Whiting 26pts 3 comps
4th John Astill 19pts 2 comps
5th Josie Kirkland 10pts 1 comp
6th Steve Marks 9pts 1 comp
7th Pete Harris 6pts 1 comp

Subject - Plaice, Wrasse, and Mackerel & Most Species Competitions. Results.

I am pleased to say that this year’s fishing comps have finally got underway.
On the 11th & 12th of July the Plaice and Wrasse Comps were fished. The weather was not too bad and I’m glad to say that there were a few fish recorded in both categories.

First the Plaice comp, with points awarded towards the Competition Accumulator.
There were three fish recorded with the winner being Steve Cowell with a fish of 1lb-8.2oz and 10pts.
In second place fishing from his own boat X-pro, Kev Rouse recorded a Plaice of 1lb-5oz and 9pts.
Finally, with a 15oz fish and 8pts was me!

Next the Wrasse Comp. The same three fishermen recorded fish, but in a different order. In first place with a Wrasse of 3lb-4oz was Kev Rouse. I was second with a fish of 3lb-1oz, and in third place was Steve Cowell who recorded a fish of 1lb-8oz. All the fish were caught at Straight Point, and weighed on board (WOB), then returned alive.

On the 18th / 19th of July the Mackerel & Most Species Competition went ahead.
Again the weather was not too bad, although first thing on Sunday morning it was very windy in the estuary.
Mackerel were very scarce and not very big. The heaviest was caught by Steve Cowell with a fish of 12.8oz and 10pts in the Accumulator. Second was Kev Rouse with 7.4oz and 9pts, and in third place, me! With a tiddler of 6.8oz and 8pts.

The Most Species comp was very close, and a variety of Species caught. 1st with 8 species was Steve Cowell. His catch was made up of Mackerel, Gurnard, Smoothhound, Conger, Bass, Dogfish, Whiting & Pouting.
2nd was Kev Rouse with 7 Species which was made up of Mackerel, Bass, Wrasse, Rockling, Black Bream, Dogfish & Pouting.
Finally me! With 6 species, Mackerel, Pouting, Conger, Dogfish, Whiting & Scad.

The next competition is scheduled for August 22nd / 23rd. Due to the cancellation of the Pollack comp earlier this year, this comp will now be for Bass & Pollack, and there are Accumulator points available for both species.

I hope a few more of you can get out there for this.

Mike Whiting - SFCC Fishing Secretary.
